- Leave a Trip Plan with a Friend – so someone will notice if you’re overdue.
- Carry the 10 Essentials – be prepared to spend a night outside if needed.
- Do Not Hike Alone – group members can assist each other in an emergency.
- Know Your Route and Limits – choose trips that match your fitness and skills, and set a clear turnaround time.
- Stay Calm if You’re Lost – panicking makes safe decision-making harder.
- Stay Put Once Lost – wandering usually takes you farther from your last known point.
- Avoid Going Downhill – North Shore ravines are steep, unstable, and difficult to escape.
- Use Signal Devices – use a whistle (three blasts for help), mirror, flashlight, or fire to attract attention.
- Build or Find Shelter – reduce exposure to wind, rain, and cold while you wait for help.
- Call for Help Early – dial 9-1-1 as soon as you know you’re lost or injured; there is no cost for rescue, and early callouts help NSR find you before conditions worsen.
